AT&T Practices

Hello all.  Last Saturday we bought our Daughter an iPhone for her Birthday.  She wanted the ease of use and the ability to have her mail, contacts, and calendars in a hand held device as well as an iPod and a phone…gets rid of quite a few items in her pockets and bag.  She brought it down to Smith and found out it didn’t work anywhere except outside and sometimes in her dorm room.  It was decided to go back to Verizon for her line because she had reception everywhere with that phone.  Now here comes the fun.

I contact AT&T to find out if I can cancel the line.  They said I couldn’t do it over the phone, but had to do it at the store I bought the phone at….OK, no big deal….but I also had to return the new 3G iPhone or pay the full non discounted price for it….Ummm yeah.  So I drive to Lexington to pick up the phone and waltz into the AT&T store where I bought it from this morning.  The gentleman was more than happy to take back the phone for a small 10% restocking fee.  I hadn’t even had it for a week….I suggested I put it on one of our existing lines since we have 2 older generation iPhones already….we were waiting for 3G service to come to NH.  Oh, no that would be fraud if I did that.  Imagine my surprise when I asked why it would be fraud…I still use the phone and extend my contract out 2 more years on the one I’m using….I don’t see the problem here.  The manager at the AT&T store told me I would have to return the phone now (with the 10% restocking fee) and then by it back again for the regular $299 price for the 16Gig.  Call me silly but this doesn’t seem right to me….I still want to use the phone, am perfectly willing to extend out my contract again, and am a real fan. Then the kicker comes…..I can’t cancel the phone line for or daughter because I’m not the account holder….WHAT!  I certainly was able to pay $299 for a phone and add a line and text messaging without being the account holder, but I can’t cancel the line now for some reason?  Hold the phone.

So in short I don’t think we will be upgrading to the new 3G phone….perhaps when our contract with AT&T is up, we will purchase the phones, jailbreak them and go to TMobile.  I couldn’t believe it.  I have always been fairly happy with AT&T and love my iPhone, but now I don’t think we will stay with them as a carrier.  We will still use our iPhones, but not with them once the contract is up.  I’ll write a post when we jailbreak the phones..that will be fun!

Just a quickie before I go to bed.  What is up with the stock market.  Friday it goes up over 300 points and today it tanks over 300 points….It’s like a roller coaster.  New ride at six flags…the Stock Market ride….every twist and turn is directly related to the highs and lows of the market this year.  I bet it would be fun.  Andy Monaco of The Diciplined Investore said that we all need to take our money out of the market…including our 401k’s.  It’s going to get interesting.

Twit Army is down for a while…that is unfortunate.  Sorry Leo!  The daughter got a new 3G iPhone..she loves it and actually has 3G service where she is going to college…the lucky girl.  Still waiting for 3G to hit NH, then it’s our turn.

I went to the Apple store today because my charger was damaged.  It was plugged in charging the laptop and then began to smoke and melted the wire.  Had the normal routine of the household been going on we would not have been home or in the same room to catch it and the house most likely would have burned down.  Showing my charger to the Genius Bar they proceeded to scan and poke at it and process a claim.  When they scanned it they found it to be 2 years old and out of warranty…they refused to do anything about it.  After almost burning down my house they didn’t want to replace a defective charger.

I was forced to purchase a new charger since the laptop needs to have power at some point.  I found the whole experience dishartening.  I am a huge Apple fan and I would like to think that my touting of the Apple brand and product has caused several in my department to purchase Apple products…yet they will not replace a defective charger.  I will need to rethink my purchase of the new 3G iPhone when we get 3G in the area.  After this experience, I have a bad taste in my mouth.  I guess it really is “Buyer Beware”.

New Technology

The Apple iPhone 3G has finally arrived.  Horray for all the Apple fans out there.  I have not purchased one yet and won’t until NH gets 3G service.  I don’t see the point seeing as Ialready have an iPhone and the aps are killer!

While watching Leo Laporte’s 24 hours of iPhone, the husband and I downloaded the new 2.0 software on Thursday.  The install and update took long but went well with no glitches.  Once the software was sucessfully installed it was time to let the downloading begin!  The first ap to be installed was “PhoneSaber”  Gotta love Star Wars!  Then came “Jott” which is a voice recording application to capture thos “don’t forget the milk” moments.  I downloaded eReader to do some light reading while waiting in the grocery line.  And “Twitterific” is a must if you follow anyone on the social networking scene using Twitter.

The software upgrade provided some changes to the phones interface as well.  The calculator changed it’s look and turns into a scientific calculator if you turn it on it’s side.  There is a separate icon for your contacts and the me.com auto sync is great.  Changes on the fly to your calendar and address book and other me.com features turns your phone into a true mini computer.  All in all it has been a great experience for this release of the iPhone.
