My Inner Shatner

Watching TWIT today on twitlive.tv I was struck by how interesting everything was and was hit by my “inner Shatner”.  I went looking for an ap for my iPhone that would let me turn it into a treckie’s dream.  I found everything I could possibly desire….for a jailbroken phone.  I don’t want to jailbreak my phone though.  I want my regular old iPhone to look cool too.  Perhaps I should just make an ap to do it then.  I have the iPhone SDK, why not?  More to come on that.

Steve Jobs Not Dying

Good news, Steve Jobs of Apple is not dying.  Rumors ran wild as reports of Steve Jobs’ poor health and imminent death were circulated around the blogoshpere.  Well those rumors happen to be unsubstantiated.  Steve is in good health and under a doctors care for a minor hormonal imbalance causing his “rapid” weight loss.  It’s not Cancer folks! I expected this news to raise Apples stock as shareholders were selling feeling that the leader of the company and the main visionary was on his way out in a literal sense.  But no, Apple stock is down by 0.77 points as of this post date.  That’s unfortunate but on a happier note, the stock market is up overall.  Will post more about MacWorld later this evening.  Geez, it’s only 11:49 am over there and much is still set to happen today.

The new year is upon us and with it the stock market has broken 9000. There is some hope yet. Macworld is this month and so is CES. I think we will see electronics that are at or below $100 due to the economy. Steve Jobs will not be at Macworld, nor will Apple which is causing quite a stir among the Apple faithful. Some are thinking the rumors of Jobs’ health may be true. I just think Apple showed all if it’s new toys before the holidays, so why bother with Macworld this year. Leo Leporte will be speaking at Macworld which will be interesting…he has asked John C. Devorak to come on stage with him.

Barack Obama gets sworn in on the 20th of this month. He has promised another stimulus package…the details have yet to be revealed, so the jury is still out on if that will be a good thing or not. I’m looking forward to 2009 and hope it proves to be a good year and that we all get to keep our jobs.

AT&T Practices

Hello all.  Last Saturday we bought our Daughter an iPhone for her Birthday.  She wanted the ease of use and the ability to have her mail, contacts, and calendars in a hand held device as well as an iPod and a phone…gets rid of quite a few items in her pockets and bag.  She brought it down to Smith and found out it didn’t work anywhere except outside and sometimes in her dorm room.  It was decided to go back to Verizon for her line because she had reception everywhere with that phone.  Now here comes the fun.

I contact AT&T to find out if I can cancel the line.  They said I couldn’t do it over the phone, but had to do it at the store I bought the phone at….OK, no big deal….but I also had to return the new 3G iPhone or pay the full non discounted price for it….Ummm yeah.  So I drive to Lexington to pick up the phone and waltz into the AT&T store where I bought it from this morning.  The gentleman was more than happy to take back the phone for a small 10% restocking fee.  I hadn’t even had it for a week….I suggested I put it on one of our existing lines since we have 2 older generation iPhones already….we were waiting for 3G service to come to NH.  Oh, no that would be fraud if I did that.  Imagine my surprise when I asked why it would be fraud…I still use the phone and extend my contract out 2 more years on the one I’m using….I don’t see the problem here.  The manager at the AT&T store told me I would have to return the phone now (with the 10% restocking fee) and then by it back again for the regular $299 price for the 16Gig.  Call me silly but this doesn’t seem right to me….I still want to use the phone, am perfectly willing to extend out my contract again, and am a real fan. Then the kicker comes…..I can’t cancel the phone line for or daughter because I’m not the account holder….WHAT!  I certainly was able to pay $299 for a phone and add a line and text messaging without being the account holder, but I can’t cancel the line now for some reason?  Hold the phone.

So in short I don’t think we will be upgrading to the new 3G phone….perhaps when our contract with AT&T is up, we will purchase the phones, jailbreak them and go to TMobile.  I couldn’t believe it.  I have always been fairly happy with AT&T and love my iPhone, but now I don’t think we will stay with them as a carrier.  We will still use our iPhones, but not with them once the contract is up.  I’ll write a post when we jailbreak the phones..that will be fun!

“Budget” iPhone ap

I’m sitting here waiting for dinner to arrive and figured I would review another so I just downloaded. This one is called BUDGET. You can keep track of your balance by entering transactions as they happen. Similar to a checkbook register, but on your phone. This so is free so the price is right. There are some definite pros & cons with this application. I like it for it’s convenience. It has the ability to export data but that is a bit clunky. If you have more than 1 bank account there isn’t the ability to have multiple accounts in this program. One good thing is that it is password protected. All in all it is an OK application, but I’m looking for something more. I give it 2 out of 5 stars.

iPhone ap “Spend”

Since the birth of the new iTunes Ap Store I have been perusing the over 700 applications trying to find the next cool tool to add to my already growing iPhone arsenal.  I found one that was quite interesting.  I have been looking for a way to keep track of my finances.  With the Safari browser I can check my balances, but if you are like me, you never really know where the money went.  Spend is a program created by Adamcode which allows you to set a series of budgets on your phone so you can keep track of your daily spending.  Buy a hamburger at McDonalds and you can input that purchase into the iPhone and immediately see how that impacts your dining out budget.

There are two different ways you can visualize how you spend your money.  You can see a balance of what you have left, or see a tally of what you have spent.  Budgets can be set up for Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Yearly.  Schedule the amount you wish to alot to the particular category, such as dining out, hit save and you have set up that particular budget category. It’s that simple.  When you make your purchases, simply tap the budgeted item it relates to, tap the + sign at the bottom left and input the description and amount of the purchase.  It’s that simple.  All balances are listed with Red, Green, and Yellow indicators showing where you are at in your spending for that category.

It is a very simple application and one well worth the $0.99 I paid for it! 🙂  This is the only iPhone ap I have paid for and plan to pay for.  More reviews to come down the road.

I went to the Apple store today because my charger was damaged.  It was plugged in charging the laptop and then began to smoke and melted the wire.  Had the normal routine of the household been going on we would not have been home or in the same room to catch it and the house most likely would have burned down.  Showing my charger to the Genius Bar they proceeded to scan and poke at it and process a claim.  When they scanned it they found it to be 2 years old and out of warranty…they refused to do anything about it.  After almost burning down my house they didn’t want to replace a defective charger.

I was forced to purchase a new charger since the laptop needs to have power at some point.  I found the whole experience dishartening.  I am a huge Apple fan and I would like to think that my touting of the Apple brand and product has caused several in my department to purchase Apple products…yet they will not replace a defective charger.  I will need to rethink my purchase of the new 3G iPhone when we get 3G in the area.  After this experience, I have a bad taste in my mouth.  I guess it really is “Buyer Beware”.
