Stock Market Plunges

The US Stock exchange takes a dive and drops over 500 points after the announcement that the House shot down the $700 Billion bill to save the financial institutions. What does this mean for us? Start taking your money out of the bank and stuff it in the mattress…the US banks are going to be in for a very hard time.  Luckily Oil (CRUDEOIL) has gone down to below $100 a barrel so it is time to start filling that tank for the winter heating months.

The nations stock market is in for a serious correction…the nations banks are failing and can’t be propped up anymore.  This is actually something that is quite normal for the stock market….it makes it’s own corrections and to be honest it is Survival of the Fittest.  Only the strong survive and they will come back better than ever.

The results of this is that other companies that want to start up during a down time, have more of a chance of success.  Get out of the stock market, try to cash in your 401K and dump any stocks that you have now.  We as a country will get through this, but we have to let the stock market do it’s own thing.  No sense being in it while it works itself out.  Once it has it’s issues resolved, by all means, jump back in!  A really good podcast I like to listen to is from Andrew Horowitz called the Disciplined Investor.  Listen to him, I found a lot of good information in his podcast.

AT&T Practices

Hello all.  Last Saturday we bought our Daughter an iPhone for her Birthday.  She wanted the ease of use and the ability to have her mail, contacts, and calendars in a hand held device as well as an iPod and a phone…gets rid of quite a few items in her pockets and bag.  She brought it down to Smith and found out it didn’t work anywhere except outside and sometimes in her dorm room.  It was decided to go back to Verizon for her line because she had reception everywhere with that phone.  Now here comes the fun.

I contact AT&T to find out if I can cancel the line.  They said I couldn’t do it over the phone, but had to do it at the store I bought the phone at….OK, no big deal….but I also had to return the new 3G iPhone or pay the full non discounted price for it….Ummm yeah.  So I drive to Lexington to pick up the phone and waltz into the AT&T store where I bought it from this morning.  The gentleman was more than happy to take back the phone for a small 10% restocking fee.  I hadn’t even had it for a week….I suggested I put it on one of our existing lines since we have 2 older generation iPhones already….we were waiting for 3G service to come to NH.  Oh, no that would be fraud if I did that.  Imagine my surprise when I asked why it would be fraud…I still use the phone and extend my contract out 2 more years on the one I’m using….I don’t see the problem here.  The manager at the AT&T store told me I would have to return the phone now (with the 10% restocking fee) and then by it back again for the regular $299 price for the 16Gig.  Call me silly but this doesn’t seem right to me….I still want to use the phone, am perfectly willing to extend out my contract again, and am a real fan. Then the kicker comes…..I can’t cancel the phone line for or daughter because I’m not the account holder….WHAT!  I certainly was able to pay $299 for a phone and add a line and text messaging without being the account holder, but I can’t cancel the line now for some reason?  Hold the phone.

So in short I don’t think we will be upgrading to the new 3G phone….perhaps when our contract with AT&T is up, we will purchase the phones, jailbreak them and go to TMobile.  I couldn’t believe it.  I have always been fairly happy with AT&T and love my iPhone, but now I don’t think we will stay with them as a carrier.  We will still use our iPhones, but not with them once the contract is up.  I’ll write a post when we jailbreak the phones..that will be fun!

It is fall and the new seasons are coming back on TV.  House is shaping up to be a great season….Wilson has said he is no longer House’s friend and never really was.  The Shield finds Vick Mackey in his usual rock and a hard place.  Eureka is shaping up to be a banner season…I hope Carter isn’t really fired.  Stargate Atlantis is a bit of a disappointment, it’s getting predictable.  Dexter will be here soon…I can’t wait.  Thank goodness for my DVR.  Please don’t crash on me!

It’s time to bone up on my word processing skills and my web development.  I may need to pick up some part time work or even another job all together.  Things aren’t looking so well for my department and it very well may be outsourced by this time next year…if not sooner.

Right now I’m taking some courses from Harvard and Stanford via iTunes University….a nifty little part of iTunes that allows me to take these classes free of charge.  The professors videotaped or recorded the classes and post them here.  Ivy League education without the Ivy League price tag.  I’m all for that.

Just a quickie before I go to bed.  What is up with the stock market.  Friday it goes up over 300 points and today it tanks over 300 points….It’s like a roller coaster.  New ride at six flags…the Stock Market ride….every twist and turn is directly related to the highs and lows of the market this year.  I bet it would be fun.  Andy Monaco of The Diciplined Investore said that we all need to take our money out of the market…including our 401k’s.  It’s going to get interesting.

Twit Army is down for a while…that is unfortunate.  Sorry Leo!  The daughter got a new 3G iPhone..she loves it and actually has 3G service where she is going to college…the lucky girl.  Still waiting for 3G to hit NH, then it’s our turn.

What A Weekend

What a weekend! We drove 500 miles this wekend and I feel it in every joint. The wedding in Alton, NH went well, 45 minutes long and no major gaffs. The church was stunning with it’s stained glass windows, huge cathedral ceilings, with midevil chandeliers.

The bride and groom were handsom and pretty as well as the bridesmaids and groomsmen…especially my groomsman. The day couldn’t have been nicer, not too hot, not too cold. I’ve never been to the Wolfeboro Inn and it is quite beautiful…wouldn’t mind taking a staycation there one day.

My stepson wants to kill me…I made him dance with me and now there is photographic evidence that he can dance if made to. We bought him new clothes for the wedding and he looked very handsom. There weren’t many kids because it was a 9:00 am wedding so nobody his age to dance with or try to impress.

We just got back from droping off his daughter at Smith and it’s time for a hot bath and bed…

Our Garmin arrived yesterday and I love it!  It is so comforting to know where you are going now….I had to play with it and of course used it to locations I already knew where I was going but the simulator lets me play with future destinations and helps me map alternate routes.  I wish there were some different voices but that is my only gripe…if you call it one.  I could have gone with the TomTom and received a multitude of voices but I liked this one.

Lots going on in the news today.  Sarah Palin’s Yahoo Mail was hacked.  Ouch!  I don’t want to be the guy who did that hack.  The stock market took a huge nose dive, due to the bailout of AIG and the bankruptcy rumor of a major Investing House, Lehman Brothers.  The cost of Oil rose while other stock dropped.  Apple dropped over $12 today, that had to hurt.  I understand there are ups and downs with the market and I’m not retiring any time soon, but my 401K is looking pretty dismal.

I hope our market perks up, because it is getting harder and harder to keep up.  I know the economic downturn will not stay down, but for the moment I want to hide my money in the mattress!
