Barak Obama voted yesterday to support an update of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. But opposed granting telecoms immunity who have already cooperated with the hundreds of illegal wire taps and internet communications requested by the Federal government without benefit of a warrant. This after decrying only months before that he will not support the bill. I guess when in an election you move the way the wind blows.
This is just one more instance of Big Brother watching. It is very disconcerting to have the government with the ability to unabashedly listen to everything you say and read everything you type just on the hunch that you are a terrorist. There are currently 40 lawsuits against telecommunication companies who have willingly cooperated with Big Brother.
The initial bill would allow those telecommunication companies to be immune from prosocution rectroactively so the 40 lawsuits will become null and void. Barack Obama has vowed to remove the immunity and hold the companies responsible for providing information to the federal government. John McCain voted against the bill altogether. Sounds like a plan to me. I am uncomfortable leaving the government with the ability to watch all we do…without oversight.
