I just finished listening to Todd Cochrane’s podcast Geek News Central located at http://www.geeknewscentral.com. This is a nice podcast that is explanatory, full of news, tech, and Todd’s experiences and opinions.
One opinion in particular kind of gets me going a bit. I work for the cable company. Data limits are part of doing business. Todd is of the opinion that the Internet should be uncapped and everyone should be able to download what they want, no matter how much they download. The unfortunate side effect of having a customer on the node downloading over 500Gig a month is that the other customers on the node are affected by this with poor service….slow speeds, dropped packets, and a bad experience. How is it fair that the rest of the neighborhood needs to suffer for one persons usage? In this instance Todd and I will continue to disagree.
I loved his story on the wind farm a company is proposing for an island in Hawaii that gets continuous strong winds. This is a wonderful idea and should be implemented, but sadly it isn’t going to happen any time soon. When is the government going to understand that we need alternative energy sources now. Jump on the opportunity to get off of the well of oil we have become reliant on.
All in all listening to the Geek News Central podcast is a joy. It brightens my day and I listen to it while getting ready for work, and then at work during my breaks. Keep up the good work, Todd!
Although Todd sometimes (often?) spouts opinions that aren’t fully thought out, I do recall him saying he would be willing to pay for increased file limits. Regardless, I think ISPs should be up-front with people and let them know what they consider reasonable usage.
If they are going to meter usage, they should have a chart available (or mailed) to their customers who are approaching or over the limit so they can see what’s going on (kind of like how you can check your minutes with a cell provider). I realize it costs money to build out the infrastructure, but as long as the consumer is informed *and* has choices, then it can be a win-win for everyone.
P.S. Do you know if that Brain Toniq has any distributions in stores. I would be willing to pick some up if I could find it locally.
Thank you for the mention of my Blog on your podcast today, Todd.
You got me on Cable companies needing to invest in infrastructure…that is a given. When the Intenet was unlimited people were not streaming videos, listening to and posting podcasts, downloading movies and other items via torrents and other streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. We as a society have changed, and it is true, that ISP’s need to change as well.
Who can argue with that? Certainly not me.
